In continuation of my confidential

despatch of the 20th.ultimo, I have the honour to

acknowledge the receipt of your cypher telegram

of the 29th.ultimo and to confirm my reply of the

31st.ultimo. Paraphrases of both messages are

enclosed,

2. I was in hopes that, in consideration

of the valuable concession under which the Macao

Government will be able to import uncertificated

opium through Hongkong, a further reduction of the

number of chests allowed to the Opium Farmer there

for local consumption might have been obtained.
